Malago Medical Student Health Service
Welcome to the BS1 UWE Student Health Service web site. We are located at the BS1 Surgery, Favell House, Queen Charlotte Street, Bristol BS1 1DQ and provide a service for students registered at UWE. The Student Health Service is provided by Malago Medical, who run both the BS1 surgery, and the Malago Surgery. All the services on the Malago Medical website are available to UWE students.

Our telephone line is open from Monday to Friday 08.30-18.30. We do not accept calls between 12.30 and 14.00 except for medical emergencies, when your call will be transferred initially to our Out of Hours service, BriSDoc. During the UWE holidays the BS1 Student Health Service will continue to be open as normal.
Urgent appointments
We try our hardest to see all students who need non-routine or appointments at our BS1 surgery. However, as most Malago Medical urgent services are run from Malago Surgery you may be required to attend the Malago Surgery if your appointment is urgent.
Joining our list
You can join our Student Health Service if you are currently a UWE student or member of staff and live in central Bristol. You can join by either presenting your NHS medical card at reception or filling in a substitute form that you can obtain from us. When you register you will be sent a new medical card from Avon Health by post. You will also be asked to fill in a confidential medical questionnaire which will be attached to your records. This will allow us to see whether you have any special medical needs or are on prescribed medication.
Our practice area
We look after patients living in central Bristol who are able to visit our surgery at Queen Charlotte Street easily. If you find attending surgery difficult or are likely to need house visits and live outside BS1 then we would recommend that you register with a doctor nearer to your Bristol accommodation. If you live in the Practice area of our main surgery, Malago Surgery (see locations for map) then we would be happy to look after you there. If you move out of area then you should re-register with a doctor as soon as possible so that your records can be sent.
Training and research
We are an approved training practice. Fully qualified doctors spend a year with us to train in General Practice. These doctors, called Registrars, regularly attend the Student Health Service to train and you will be informed if they are consulting when you make your appointment.
Guidance for Letters of Extenuating Circumstances Requests
If something major happens to you that you think seriously affects your performance in a UWE assessment or examination (including non-submission), you can ask the UWE Academic Board to consider this as Extenuating Circumstances when they decide your results. They will only do this if you make a submission to them - via the Extenuating Circumstances Panel - in writing.
You will need to make your submission on a UWE form EC1. The form and guidance on the UWE procedures can be accessed via the two links below:
UWE Extenuating Circumstances Guide
UWE Extenuating Circumstances Form (EC1)
One reason for making an Exceptional Circumstance application is significant ill health. You will need to support your application with either a Medical Certificate or a letter explaining the nature of your illness. We may be able to countersign a letter supporting your Extenuating Circumstances submission but only if you consulted one of our doctors about the illness within the previous two weeks. Letters regarding illnesses prior to this period cannot be verified by a gp at this Practice except in exceptional circumstances which would need to be discussed with the doctor concerned.
The following information may be helpful when preparing your letter of extenuating circumstances.
Please include the following information in your letter:
- Your name
- Date of Birth
- Bristol Address
- Telephone Number
- Department
- Course
- Module
- Year of Course
Please give the date and the name of the person who will receive this letter e.g., your tutor. Please give an opening statement along the lines of "this letter is to give you details of why I am seeking your consideration for a period of ill health". State what has been the matter with you giving dates, symptoms, diagnosis and that you have seen the doctor and where and when. Please indicate how the period of ill health has affected your work.
- State how you would like your tutor to help you:
- Maybe thank the tutor and sign the letter.
Please be advised that the doctors will do their very best to get the letter back to you within 48 hours. You may appreciate that this is normally not considered to be urgent and is not NHS work. There is, therefore, a charge associated with this which currently stands at £10.00.
We hope the above guidance is helpful. Please do not hesitate to discuss this with a doctor should you consider that your circumstances do not fit the guidelines above.
